It is said that, the quality of one's communication is the quality of one's life. With a vision of improving the quality of communication and life of children with hearing impairment, KOSHI was established in the year 1996. The school has embraced Oralism, a method of teaching that uses lip reading and speech through mimicking the mouth shapes and breathing patterns of speech. The school has classes from Pre-KG to third standard. Once the foundation is established strong and speech skills are imparted to the students, they are integrated into mainstream schools. The journey of KOSHI started with 4 students and today, 110 students have benifitted from this school. They have been successfully integrated into mainstream institutions. At KOSHI, we not only focus on the child's education in class, but also strive at creating the right learning environment at home, by training parents in Oralism. Parents are involved in their child's progress right from the first day of school.

Introduction to Sound
The children have no experience of sound and speech until they join here. The first thing they learn at KOSHI is to experience sound through vibrations; speech through lip reading. Children are made to pay attention to the face of the person talking to them. This sets the base for face and lip reading.
They are familiarised with everyday objects around them and made to watch the lip movements simultaneously. Parents' involvement is integral in this form of education. They are made to sit in the class and learn alongside their children.

Phonetics
Single syllable words in Tamil are first taught to the children at this stage of teaching. Initially, single syllable nouns are taught by physically showing them the object and making them observe the lip movements and vibrations. They are then made to produce the sound. When nouns are covered to a certain extent, single syllable verbs are taught.
The classes are not restricted to the classrooms alone. Children are taken on field trips to observe and learn the usage of the words they learn in class.

Phonology
The children move on to forming short, simple sentences at this stage of teaching. They are taught to combine the nouns and verbs that they have already learnt, to make short sentences and say it. This is again done with combining actions, lip movements and vibrations.
The next phase is to teach them the three main tenses - past, present and future using the same sentences they learnt earlier. By this stage, they are familiar with Tamil words and forming sentences and are ready to move to the next level.

Progress
From this stage on, since the basics are laid strong, children move on to learning other subjects such as Maths, Science and Social Science. Extra curricular activities such as gardening and craft are taught to aid their overall development. In gardening, they are made to grow and take care of their own plants. English is introduced gradually.
The parents are involved in their child's progress right from the beginning. They observe the classes, in order to follow the same method while teaching at home. Most parents prefer to put their children in mainstream schools after their third grade. By this time, the teachers ensure that the children have developed both speech skills and subject knowledge.
With 21 years of teaching experience, she is the Principal of KOSHI. She has been working in the school since its inception. With degrees in MA, B.Ed, B.Ed Special Education and trained in Oralism, she is the driving force of the school.
A teacher with an immense passion for teaching children with hearing impairment, she has been serving as a teacher in KOSHI for the last 17 years. In addition to a B.Sc and B.Ed degree, she has a Diploma in Teaching the Deaf Senior.
With a master's degree in arts and B.Ed in Special Education, she has more than 11 years of experience teaching at KOSHI. The determination to see her students succeed in speaking, keeps her striving to propel them towards progress.
Over 20 years of teaching experience and 8 years of it with KOSHI, she works with plenty of patience and love towards her students. She has a Diploma in Teaching the Hearing Impaired, in addition to a bachelor's degree.
She has more than 10 years of teaching experience, here at KOSHI. With a B.Sc degree and B.Ed in Special Education, she dreams of a bright future for her students and works to see them shine in mainstream education without any difficulties.
She is a visiting teacher who comes to school thrice a week, to add more colour to the lives of students at KOSHI. She teaches them different types of craft skills and brings out their creativity, making the learning process more fun.
