Sakthi Thiranalayam

Education and employment opportunities are not accessible for many women with disabilities, especially women with blindness. Many of them have difficulties in earning a livelihood for themselves. To empower such women, Sakthi Thiranalayam was established in the year 1987 with the guidance of Rev.Sister Stella, Little Flower Convent, Chennai and Dr. M.N.G.Mani, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore.

Initially started as a skill development centre where blind women were trained in orientation and mobility, cooking, stitching, home management, shopping and hand work, it ventured into providing job opportunities for them. Products such as envelopes, incense sticks, cleaning liquids, disinfectants, files and wire baskets are being made by them. The management markets these products and provides a source of income for them. Right from the time of inception until now, xx blind women have benefited out of these opportunities provided to them. Currently, there are 15 women working here. Lunch and medical aid are also provided. The retired women are given a small sum as welfare amount every month.

"A journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step."

That single step was first taken in the year 1987 by the Founder and Managing Trustee of Sakthi Thiranalayam. A seed was sown in her heart while she was serving at the Little Flower Convent, Chennai that works for children with visual impairments. Her volunteering experience there set the course for what followed - establishing a centre dedicated to empowering blind women. Soon the seed became a tree and today, Sakthi Thiranalayam has empowered many women through employment. She dreams of a future where all persons with disabilities are provided with equal opportunities in all aspects of life. She strives to empower many more blind women and make them independent.

Radha Manickam Trustee

She has recently taken over the administration of the Centre. Although being a post graduate from Oxford University, she chose to come back here owing to her passion in social work.

Dheepa Manager

She's oversees the Accounts and Administration. She has been a part of the organisation for the last 8 years and has become an integral part of Sakthi Thiranalayam.

Balan & Arumugam Helpers

With an experience of 20 and 8 years respectively, they are the helpers providing assistance in the daily work and without whom the day-to-day activities would not have run smoothly.

Amidst their busy schedule working in ABT Ltd, this energetic team also volunteers to do their part in assisting with the activities and accounts of the centre.
